Why on earth do this thankless job?

I've been a nurse for ever and ever... And still know this is the best job!
I've worked in hospitals, clinics, helicopters, jets and offices, all as a registered nurse.

I've had people throw containers full of vomit at me, pinch me, kick me and spit at me! I've handled blood from someone with AIDS, I've gone to a place where everyone is sick and most of them are contagious, when most other people try to stay away from the sick.
I've had to walk over a body with a plastic tarp over it to get to their infant child to treat them on the side of a major highway at night.

I've heard over and over, "I could never do what you do!"
So why do I, and others do this job?

Could be because we would never make it as accountants, or that we love the power of people listening to us or the feeling of control we have after we give someone medicine to sedate/knock them out after they swore at us!
But I believe we all have a pull, a calling to some career! And I knew at a young age, after babysitting my 4 younger siblings, that mine was not in teaching those rugrats!
But helping my sweet sisters and brother when they got hurt (even when I caused the hurt) was just something I always did.

I have traveled extensively thru the US as a traveling nurse, and just moving from north in the summertime to the south in winter: and have been able to find a job anywhere!
And usually for better money (at least initially) than those traveling with me.

So as you have probably guess by now, yes I would recommend this job to anyone!
Even when there is blood and vomit on my hands and shoes.
